Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. (NMHSI) welcomes anyone seeking health care, regardless of their income, occupation, age, ethnicity, or country of origin. Since 1968, NMHSI has provided culturally appropriate primary medical and dental care, serving seven counties in Northwest Lower Michigan. NMSHI is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) entity and is one of 40 Federally Qualified Health Centers in Michigan. This health center is a Health Center Program grantee under 42 U.S.C. 254b, and a deemed Public Health Service employee under 42 U.S.C. 233(g)-(n).
Northwest Michigan Health Services mission is to provide quality medical and dental primary care services to persons of all ages in Northwest Lower Michigan in a culturally appropriate manner.
In Michigan, agriculture is a 6 billion dollar a year industry, second only to the auto industry. The Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers that have traveled to Michigan to work in the fields and orchards of our communities make up the largest percentage of it's work force. Historically, because of language barriers and other circumstances, these workers faced greater challenges than the general public in accessing health care. Because of this disparity in health care access, Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. was established in 1968 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing primary health care and preventative care to Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers in a compassionate manner. In 2010, faced with the fact that Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers were not alone in their struggle to access health care, but among tens of thousands of uninsured or under-insured people and families in Michigan, NMHSI committed to the expansion of it's services to all of the area's under-served population. The Mission and Vision of the organization was updated to reflect the organizational shift and expansion of services.
